Down on the Farm: 8/24/2014

AAA  Memphis Redbirds swarmed over the Fresno Grizzlies 8-0:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, 2B, CS(19).  BA= .272.

AA  Bowie Baysox blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 1-0:

Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.85.

Mejia has a 2.22 ERA over his last 5 starts spanning 24.1 IP.

High A  Visalia Rawhide defeated the San Jose Giants 8-0:

Ryan Lollis(DH)- 3 for 4.  BA= .241.
Ben Turner(Catcher)- 3 for 4.  BA= .289.
Nick Vander Tuig(RHP)- 4.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.67.
Jake Smith(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Lollis and Turner had all 6 of the Giants hits between them.  Turner has not hit for much power, but he has 34 BB's and just 35 K's in 356 AB's.  In 2 pro seasons, he has just 59 K's and 54 BB's in 734 AB's.    Those kinds of ratios seem to be working out for Joe Panik.  We will continue to monitor Turner's progress.

Low A  Lexington Legends beat the Augusta Greenjackets 4-2:

Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 8 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.92.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Tri-Cities Dust Devils 6-5:

Christian Arroyo(SS)- 3 for 5.  BA= .325.

Rookie AZL  D'Backs downed the Giants 5-1:

Julio Pena(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .211.
Sam Coonrod(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 3.90.
Stetson Woods(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.57.
Ryan Hernandez(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.65.
Marcus Wilson(OF, D'Backs)- 0 for 4.  BA= .208.

From the stat line, it looks like Coonrod may be working on a 2-seam FB that he can pitch to contact and get GB outs making him less dependent on the strikeout.  All good things must come to an end.  This was the first game in which Stetson Woods has allowed runs.  Maybe the Giants got a better HS OF than Marcus Wilson later in the draft in Byron Murray?

  1. What a horrible day for Giants baseball. From the big league club to the entire farm system minus SK. Mejia and Arroyo were definitely the bright spots. Today is a new day and hopefully we will get back on track.

  2. Who will the Giants recall when the roster expands? My opinion:

Lock to get call up: Perez, Kontos
Lock to activate from DL: Belt, Adrianza, Sanchez

Likely to get call up: Parker, Brown?, Strickland

    Don't know: Kickham, Cordier

    Intriguing possibility: Carbonell

    Unlikely: Villalona, Flores

The Giants can still use another catcher given the uncertainly with Sanchez, and another reliever. Can the Giants move Cain and Scuturo to the 60 days DL to open up spots for these two positions?

  3. If we are going to get hot, today is as good as any day to get going.

And if we have a lead or are in a close ball game, forget the after-6 inning rule and bring in, if available (what happened to roster management - just 4 outfielders? - or what happened to Gary Brown?), bring in a defensive sub for Morse, even it's just the 6th.

    1. Honestly, if you have to sub for Morse in the 6'th inning, then he should not even be on the roster.

I do think they would be better off with Perez on the Roster than Duffy, since they apparently don't have plans to play Duffy anyway.

    2. DrB, what do you think about calling Jarrett Parker up instead. I agree Matt Duffy should be sent down to play everyday if there is no place for him. Parker seems to have a decent amount of power and knows how to take a walk. Perez does have some nice defense but he brings very little to the plate. Chris Dominguez is another guy I would like to see given a chance. He has about 150 games in either LF or RF. I give him the benefit of the doubt he provides better defense than Morse. The feel good story would have to be Mark Minicozzi. He has hit very solid this year. All 3 of these guys I would rather have in SF than Perez. We need a guy who can step up to the plate and help us and also provide average or better defense.

    3. Jarrett Parker always seems to put up similar numbers no matter what environment he is in. He's kind of a tall lanky guy with an awkward looking batting stance and has always had relatively low BA's that make you wonder if he'll ever break the Mendoza Line in the majors. I honestly doubt whether either Dominguez or Minicozzi would be a defensive upgrade or even as good as Michael Morse in LF.

  4. I would like to see a roster move that allows for Chris Heston to get a call up.

    1. Who would you drop from the 40 man roster?

    2. Can't you put Scutaro and Cain on the 60 Day DL to free up 2 spots? I think we all know Scutaro is done playing baseball. I think the Giants will hold out to see if he retires so they can avoid paying him for 2015.

    3. I would drop Kickham . I am not convinced he has the right stuff.

    4. Heston probably deserves at least one more look at the MLB level, but he's never had the kind of raw stuff that makes you think he is going to have any success there.

    5. You can drop a guy from the 40 if they go on the 60 day DL, but they cannot play for 60 days. So, that would mean (unless it can be back dated) they would be out for about 3 weeks in 2015 I would think? No real issue with Scutaro since I think with Panik's emergence, Scutaro is at best a back up (a very expensive one). Cain being out for 3 weeks would be bad though. But that is one spot. I'd like to see what Heston can do too; he's only 25/26 so I wouldn't hang him over his first call up.

  5. The news here in Oklahoma City is that the Dodgers are moving their AAA club to town from Albuquerque. They like this area/climate to give them a better idea of what they have compared to the high altitude and dry weather of New Mexico where the ball flys. I already have to deal with OU fans and Dallas Cowboy fans and now the Dodgers too, sad.
