Game Wrap 5/5/2015: Giants 6 Padres 0

The Giants played their best game of the season just 2 days after playing their previous best game of the season.  Ryan Vogelsong, coming off a disastrous start in LA pitched shutout ball for 7 innings with strong run support despite Angel Pagan missing the game with an injured finger.  Key Lines:

Norichika Aoki- 0 for 5.  BA= .291.  Aoki's BA takes a hit, but he made several nifty catches in LF to make up for the lack of  production at the plate.

Joe Panik- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .292.  Panik cranks his second HR in 3 games.

Brandon Belt- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .242.  Belt seems to be seeing the ball better.  He led off the second inning with a booming double and scored the Giants first run.

Brandon Crawford- 3 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .262.  Crawford moves up to the 5-hole and does not flinch.  He is starting to look like a breakout player.  He went into tonight's game tied for the 28'th highest fWAR in all of MLB at 0.9.   I'm pretty sure he moves up from that after this game.

Matt Duffy- 2 for 4.  BA= .241.  Duffy has a couple of line drive singles and played a nice 3B while McGehee gets a breather.

Ryan Vogelsong- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.84.  Vogey came out challenging with the FB and dominated the Padres although I will say there seemed to be several flyball outs that might have ton farther in other ballparks.

The Win moved the Giants above .500, into second place in the NL West.  It kept them 3.5 games behind the Dodgers and moved them into the lead for the second Wild Card playoff spot.

This was also the Giants 5'th win in a row and their 3'rd consecutive shutout.

Chris Heston tries to keep the magic going tomorrow afternoon facing Ian Kennedy.

  1. Yes, Crawford is now tied for 15th with Todd Frazier, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Anthony Rizzo, all at 1.3. He is one of only four in the first 18 who is achieving 1.3 or better without an inflated BABIP, as arbitrarily defined as over .325. (Crawford is at .298.) A good number of those above him, given those BABIPs, may well have noticeable declines in their rate of fWAR increase. If Crawford can keep at his current average-BABIP pace, he should rise in this ranking.

    1. And it looks like the Giants have 5 players, Crawford, Panik, Posey, Pagan and Aoki in the top 70. In a 30 team league, I'd say that is pretty darn good.
